Information on the National Agency for Education's statistics

The National Agency for Education is responsible for Sweden's Official Statistics on pre-school activities, school-age childcare, schools and adult education. Data is presented for all levels of education, except for university level statistics.

The national follow-up system provides quantitative, recurrent data on developments in the education system. Each year, data is collected from all over Sweden, on children, students, staff, expenditure and educational performance.

Publishing the Statistics

On the website the statistics are published by type of activity and type of school. For each type of activity there is a description of the data that has been collected. The data is presented in different categories: children, pupils, staff, expenditure and grades. The tables are published in English up to 2008 from 2009 they are only available in Swedish with an English guide "list of terms" which provides an English translation of the terms used.

Collection of statistics

Statistics Sweden (SCB) collects on behalf of the National Agency for Education statistics on pre-school activities, school-age childcare, schools and adult education. The data collection is governed by the National School Board regulations and data is collected from school principals. This means that school principals have the responsibility to provide data.

Reliability of the information

The data for school statistics is based on censuses of the register of schools in Sweden as a starting point. The respondents are schools and local authorities. Local governments provide data on pre-school activities and school-age childcare for activities under both independent and municipal direction.

The data collection is mostly carried out electronically. Student Data is collected on an individual and / or group level. Information on teaching staff is gathered on an individual basis with the exception of staff working with school-age childcare.<br />

Joint processing of registration information

Some tables present data on students which is not primarily based on the data from schools and municipalities. Data on: foreign background and students living in another municipality are gathered from Statistics Sweden's register of the total population. Information on teachers´ educational training is drawn from the National Agency for Higher Education's graduate register.

Who uses our statistics?

Parliament, government and municipalities are major users of the National Agency for Education´s statistics. Other users include the media, researchers, students, organizations and the general public. The statistics also provide the basis for national and international comparisons within the field of education.
