This literature review consists of the current knowledge gathered about basic literacy in adults who have previously had limited opportunities to learn to read and write. The focus of this review is written language teaching within municipal adult education in Swedish for immigrants and municipal adult education in Swedish as a second language at basic level. This literature review is based on research into traditions of written language teaching and basic learning of reading and writing for adults. It also discusses the relationship between literacy, power and identity. The review is intended primarily for teachers and heads of schools.
