What happens after your case has been decided

When you have received your certification, we register your eligibility to teach in the teacher- and preschool teacher registry.

If you have not been granted certification, some common reasons for dismissal of your application are:

  • Your degree is not a teaching degree, preschool teaching degree or recreation instructor degree for the public school system in your country of study.
  • The length and scope of the education differs significantly from that which is required in Sweden (for example where the entire length of the education has been two years or less.
  • The certifications are not at an academic level (for example post-secondary teaching degrees).
  • The national requirements associated with the type of teaching degree and subjects are not met.
  • The content of the education differs significantly from that which is required in Sweden.
  • You have not shown the required level of proficiency in Swedish.

The decision will primarily be sent to your Swedish digital mailbox (for example KIVRA. This is not the same as your e-mail address). If you do not have a Swedish digital mailbox, your decision will be sent through physical mail to your home address.

If you are granted certification

The certification is sent as an attachment in the same e-mail that contains your decision. When you have received your certification, you do not need to register as a teacher or preschool teacher anywhere else. In order to find employment as a teacher or preschool teacher, you can contact an employer directly, or register with the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen).

If you are not granted certification

The most common reason for dismissal of your case is that you have not shown that you have a teaching degree, preschool teaching degree or recreation instructor degree for the public school system in your country of study.

If your case has been dismissed and you wish to enrol in a Swedish teacher- or preschool teacher training programme, you should contact a study counsellor with a university or university college that provides teacher- or preschool teacher training. The university or university college can also assess which of your previous merits can be counted towards your new teaching- or preschool teaching degree.

Rejection of incomplete applications

If we have rejected your application, it is because you have not submitted sufficient documentation to process your case or that you have not paid the application fee. A common reason for rejection is that you have not submitted a completed and signed application form and/or all required documents.

If your application has been rejected, you must reapply in order for us to process your case.

If we decide that you must complete compensation measures or additional qualifying steps

Compensations measures if you have a degree from an EU or EEA country, or from Switzerland

If your qualifications do not meet all the requirements for certification, our decision in your case may contain information about compensation measures that you need to complete before a certification can be issued. Compensation measures may entail university studies, work experience as a teacher or preschool teacher (a so-called adaptation period) or an aptitude test.

When you have completed your studies, your adaptation period, or your aptitude test, you need to submit documentation proving that you have successfully completed the compensation measures. The documents should be sent by e-mail.

E-mail the documents to [legkomplettering@skolverket.se]

Put “compensation measure”, followed by your case number in the subject line of the e-mail.

If your compensation measure involved work as a teacher or preschool teacher, please use the following certificate of experience form:

Additional qualifying steps if you have a degree from a country outside of the EU, the EEA or from Switzerland

If your qualifications do not meet all the requirements for certification, our decision in your case may contain information about additional qualifying steps that you need to complete before a certification can be issued. These steps may entail university studies or work experience as a teacher or preschool teacher.

When you have completed the qualifying steps that are outlined in your decision, you will need to reapply for certification. Submit documentation proving that you have successfully completed the qualifying steps along with your application.

If you have worked as a teacher or preschool teacher as part of the qualifying steps, please use the following certificate of experience form:

Decision on your professional qualifications

If you have applied for certification based on a teaching degree, a preschool teaching degree, or as a recreation instructor degree from an EU or EEA country, or from Switzerland, we will assess your professional qualifications as a part of your decision. However, a recognition of your professional qualifications does not grant you eligibility to teach. You also need a certification as a teacher or preschool teacher to be granted eligibility. If we are unable to recognise your professional qualifications, it will be stated in your decision, along with information on how you can have your qualifications recognised.

    FAQ

After receiving your appeal, we will review your case to assess whether there are reasons for us to change our decision. Regardless of whether we find that we can change the decision or not, we will refer your case to the Administrative Court, which will assess the case independently.

No, we will send your decision and certification electronically, to your Swedish digital mailbox (for example KIVRA. This is not the same as your e-mail address).
If you do not have a Swedish digital mailbox, your decision will be sent through physical mail to the home address you have provided in your application form.

We do not issue certifications in English, but we can provide a document in Swedish verifying that you have a Swedish certification as a teacher or preschool teacher. You can then choose to translate the document on your own.

To request such a document, e-mail us at lleg.registerutdrag@skolverket.se.

If you do not have a program that allows you to split PDF-files, you can instead use your device’s “print to PDF” function, which lets you choose which specific pages to “print”. A new PDF-document will be created, that will only contain the pages that you have selected. This process does not require an actual printer and works on many different devices (such as computers and phones).

The exact steps for how to print to PDF depend on which PDF-reader you are using (for example Adobe Acrobat Reader, your browser or another reader). We refer you to the documentation and support pages for your particular PDF-reader for more information and guidance.
